Summit Overview
The growing threat of international & domestic terrorism has renewed the Indian Government’s interest in our nation’s critical infrastructure protection issues. Unlike the policies before, which were focused on infrastructure adequacy, the Indian Government now has become increasingly concerned about critical infrastructure protection. This concern, in turn, has led policy makers to reconsider the definition of “infrastructure” in a security context. Infrastructure now is being looked as the framework of interdependent networks and systems comprising identifiable industries, institutions and distribution capabilities those provide a reliable flow of products and services essential to the defense and the economic security of India.
Critical infrastructure is the backbone of our nation’s economy. We know it as the power we use in our homes, the water we drink, the transportation that moves us, and the communication systems we rely on to stay in touch with friends and family. Protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure is a shared responsibility; the government cannot do it alone. Through an unprecedented public-private partnership framework, the Indian government should work with other Government agencies, State and local agencies, law enforcement, Critical Infrastructure owners and operators, and other partners to protect the critical infrastructure and build resilient communities.
Many of the critical services that are essential to the well-being of the economy are increasingly becoming dependent on IT. ICT or Information infrastructure enables large scale processes throughout the economy, facilitating complex interactions among systems across global networks. Their interactions propel innovation in industrial design and manufacturing, e-commerce, e-governance, communications, and many other economic sectors. As of today, our Government is making efforts to identify the core services that need to be protected from electronic/cyber attacks and is seeking to work with organisations responsible for these systems so that their services are secured. The primary focus of these efforts is to secure the information resources belonging to Government as well as those in the critical sectors such as Defence, Finance, Energy, Transportation and Telecommunications.
As a first in the 2 part series, the purpose of this Blackarrow summit “India Critical Infrastructure Protection Summit” is to establish a real-time ability for professionals from Electrical Power, Telecom & Oil and Gas sector to learn & share information on the current status of their infrastructure protection elements. The summit’s goal is to protect our critical infrastructure by eliminating known vulnerabilities.
